Activity: Increasing My Influence Copy

Module 6 Activity: Increasing My Influence

Leadership author and researcher Jim Clemmer has identified 12 key factors that increase the potential for being successful in persuasion actions. Clemmer states that the amount of influence you have is directly related to the strength of your Influence Index in each situation. This Index helps to gauge your position with a person or group in a particular situation. Each time you are trying to influence another person or group toward your point of view or course of action, it’s important to assess your position of influence to determine if you have enough strength to proceed. In this activity you will assess how you’re doing with the 12 key factors in using Clemmer’s Influence Index.

Instructions: Think about a particular situation you want to influence. The Influence Index assessment is based on a five-point scale. 1 is extremely weak, 2 is fairly weak, 3 is moderate, 4 is fairly strong, and 5 is extremely strong. Using this scale, evaluate the situation that you thought about.

Total Score

Scoring:

  • 45 points or higher – You are in a strong position to influence that person or group in that situation.
  • 25 – 44 points – Not very strong. You might want to wait for a better time or strengthen a few of your lowest areas.
  • 24 points or lower – Your ability to influence is very low. You clearly have a lot of work to do if you want to increase your preparation on that issue or in that situation.
